I have a solo show up in Cordova. It’s been up since the end of August but I wanted to share some photos with you, since I know many might not make it all the way there.
It is a similar body of work to the show I had in Fairbanks last summer, but with some differences, as happens over a year. So I want to give you a tour on my blog:
Here is what you see when you turn the first corner. I tried to mix up different views of the landscape, including landscapes, vegetation studies, and portraits of rocks and bird nests. This comes closer to conveying the experience I have studying a landscape, seeing it all together, and then in intimate parts. I love how Denis built these shelves to display smaller works on. It is a creative solution to hanging all these small works, and it’s an intimate way to display the work. You feel like you can just pick it up, like the rock or the nest.
Here is the statement from the show:
I am in love with studying the natural world around me, and from my place of solitude on the Nizina River, outside McCarthy, AK, I have plenty of opportunities to do so. When I make a painting or drawing I spend intense time observing my subjects and distilling their shapes and textures onto the page with pen, paint, and pencil. I use select detail, like a divot in a rock or the shape of a leaf, to create focus and move the eye across the page. I create intimate portraits of inanimate objects including bird nests, clumps of vegetation, and rocks to appreciate the beauty and the story of each thing. In some work, other papers including maps or ledger paper, are incorporated into my drawings. These help me to tell the story of how we try to understand and quantify the land around us. I use my training as a naturalist and science illustration to make observations about natural history, but I am also interested in the human connection, and how I project myself onto the world around me.
Thanks to Paula and Denis for help putting the show up and making it look beautiful, as well as to everyone at the Cordova Museum. Their new space is so beautiful, it is lovely to have an exhibit there. Also thanks to the Fungus Festival and to Cathy at the Cordova Chamber of Commerce for making it such a fun weekend to be in Cordova.
